Remembering the Posthuman: A Speculative Nonfiction (2015)

This experimental visual essay takes an indeterminate approach to the topic of posthumanism. For the purposes of this essay, the posthuman is figured as a mode of viewership as well as being, a form of mediated being where the cinema-symbolic overruns humanist identification and connection. Drawing on several traditions of thought within film studies, philosophy and critical theory, I propose that the posthuman is not a figure of the future but one of the past, one that might be ‘remembered’ through critical engagement with speculative fiction and their virtual images. Remembering the Posthuman attempts to enact the kind of radical rupture theories of the posthuman describe, through textual attack, speculative reasoning, and good old-fashioned visual analysis.
